Term 1 at Crimson AGE School: A Strong Start to the Year

As Term 1 draws to a close, it feels like a good time to pause and take it all in.

Nine weeks into the school year and already the energy across Crimson AGE School has been something special. Classrooms have been busy, ideas have been flowing, and there’s been a real sense of students settling in, reconnecting, and finding their rhythm.

This term, students have been exploring who they are, where they come from, and what matters to them.

For some, that has looked like sharing family stories or building personal projects. For others, it’s meant asking bigger questions and reflecting on their experiences and goals.

In our Literacy programme, students explored Letter to Daniel and used it as inspiration to write letters to their future selves. One student reflected:

"It's strange to think about how far we’ve come. Every small choice we made, every time we stood up after falling, every time we reached out or stayed silent when we needed to - all of that has shaped us. There were moments when we were scared, when we wanted to hide, and when it felt like no one could understand, and yet somehow we survived. There’s something comforting in knowing that we are still learning, still growing, and still figuring out what it means to be us." And this really helps to encapsulate a captured moment in time; their hopes, worries, and how they see themselves growing.

A lot of the learning this term has come from doing, not just listening. Projects have ranged widely from coding and science investigations to creative work and research into real-world issues. One senior student, for example, explored traffic congestion on Lake Road, even organising an interview to better understand possible solutions.

These kinds of experiences give students the chance to take ownership of their learning and see how it connects to the world around them.

Our End of Term Showcase of Learning was a real highlight. What stood out wasn’t just the range of work on display, but all the pride students had within sharing it. There is never a single way to present learning, and this showcase, showcased how learning can be demonstrated and experienced in multiple ways.

From coding and research projects to food, art, and hands-on demonstrations, every project felt like a  personal reflection to each. Students weren’t just completing these tasks, but they were sharing something that mattered to them, that they’ve created through their own volition.

Our senior students brought some particularly memorable contributions:

  • A Black Jack table exploring the psychology of gambling

  • A creative writing piece imagining life at sea

  • Research into complex topics delivered with confidence

  • Food and hospitality that helped bring everyone together

The shared meal, with dishes from different cultures, became one of the most special parts of the afternoon, it helps to remind everyone tat we may share the same things like food, and regardless of its differences, it still brings everyone together.

Another standout this term has been the way students have stepped up to share their work. At our school Gathering, there was a real sense of focus in the room. Students listened to each other, responded, and supported one another in a way that felt genuine. Students shared how they approach writing, where they work alongside a “critical friend”  someone who gives feedback, helps refine ideas, and supports the process. It’s a simple idea, but it builds trust, confidence, and stronger work.

But some of the best parts of the term weren’t planned at all!

A visit from a kitten turned into an unexpected art session. A student boating to school became the highlight of the day. Time at the beach led to climbing, exploring, and figuring things out together. These are the moments where students test themselves, solve problems, and build confidence without even realising it. The school camp also highlighted these important skills when placed into unknown environments, with a more outdoor learning experience and having to spend more time with classmates, really testing the resilience that our students at Crimson AGE have, to navigate a different type of situation that many haven’t faced before.

This term has also been about people. We’ve welcomed new students and families, hosted international learners, and seen friendships form across year levels and backgrounds.

Our Open Night reflected that sense of community, with many new families coming through the doors, the youngest at four. For us, that kind of support means a lot, and it really speaks to the environment that we are nurturing and creating here.

As we head into the next term, there’s plenty to look forward to. More projects, more experiences, and more opportunities for students to try new things and build confidence along the way.

If there’s one simple way to keep that conversation going at home, it might just be this:

“What was your favourite part of learning today and why?”

It’s often in those moments of enjoyment, challenge, or pride that the most meaningful learning is happening.

We look forward to seeing you all back for an incredible Term 2!
